Name:Gore Street chalk pit, Monkton

Summary

A post medieval chalk pit was located near St. Mary Magdelene's Church to the east of Gore Street. The site is marked on the Ordnance Survey 1st and 2nd edition historic maps, indicating it was in use until c.1896 at least. On the 3rd edition Ordnance Survey map the site is marked as 'Old Chalk Pit' suggesting it had fallen out of use by c.1922 when this map was released. There are not though to be any remains of this monument now visible at the site.
