Monument details

HER Number:TR 26 NE 219
Type of record:Monument
Name:Millers Lane chalk pit, Monkton

Summary

A large chalk pit is located to the west of Monkton. A small chalk pit was recorded at this location on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition map of c.1861. This site is still visible on the 2nd and 3rd edition Ordnance Survey maps of c.1896 to 1922. It is uncertain when the pit was extended to cover the large area that it now covers. On the 4th edition map the pit appears to have slightly extended in size eastwards although it is still just a fraction of the area of the site remianing today.
