Summary

Large scale brick earth extraction took place in this area between around 1860 and around 1916. Two companies, Cremers and Horsfords, were operating in the area, with their own washbacks and manufacturing set-ups. Horsfords was linked to wharves on the upper (southerly) part of Oare Creek.

Brickworks shown on O.S. 6" 2nd ed. map, sheet 34 NW (1897). (1)

Part of the brickworks was owned by Cremers and was active from the mid nineteenth century to around 1912. (2)

Another brickfield in this complex was known as Horsford's Field, starting up around 1870 and closing down around 1916. This was a large scale operation with washbacks, sheds and an engine house. A tunnel under the road in the 1890s linked the site to new extraction areas in Bysing Wood. Horsfords was linked to wharves on Oare Creek (3)
