Grain Power Station, built 1971-5, the largest oil fired station in Europe when opened. Architects Farmer & Dark. Concrete walling on steel frame with no windows and single concrete stack (1), site photographs see (2,3).
Mentioned in Isle of Grain Historic Area Assessment conducted by English Heritage in 2014. "Grain and Kingsnorth form part of the wider story of energy provision and the development of the building type in the post-war years. Furthermore, Grain Power Staion has claims to architectural distinction, described as representing 'a return to monumentality without compromising on the functional expression of form and the elimination of superfluous detail' and, more poetically, as 'the Chartres of the genre, one of the greatest in Europe' " (4).
