'Got on shore and filled. The inspecting Commissioner was of the opinion the wreck was caused by deviation of the compass, as it appears the charts were correct and the lead was repeatedly hove; a good look out ought to be kept on the lights in the river. The captain, mate and crew left the ship, but returned to her shortly after for the purpose of saving stores. About 10-12 boats put out from Southend, boarded her, and commenced stripping the vessel. An application was made to the Port Admiral, who despatched the AFRICAN and WILDFIRE steam vessels to the spot for driving off the wreckers, and also to save the vessel from further depredation. Part of the cargo was landed at Southend. The two masts had been cut down by the wreckers.' Wind WSE force 5 in the last quarter of the ebb tide.
