East Demi Battery, which is located on top of East Demi Bastion – a Napolionic earthwork created on the north eastern side of Dover Castle’s outer defences, was constructed in 1874 as part of of a major re-armament of Dover Castle. It is one of four new batteries constructed within the castle at this time, the others being: Shoulder of Mutton Battery, Shot Yard Battery and Hospital Battery.

It appears to have replaced an earlier (probably temporary battery) in this location. It was originally intended to house two 9-inch 12 ton RML guns. In 1887 there were still two 9-inch RML guns but by 1910 the guns had been removed. The southern position faces due south while the other faces south-east and each has a semi-circular brick retaining wall around the central pivot and stone blocks with hoops for securing the guns. Summarised from sources. (1-3)
