Summary
During the early part of the Napoleonic Wars (c. 1804) a gun tower, St Mary's Hornwork was built in the form of a casemated guardhouse at the northern end of the Lower Lines. A gate through the south-eastern corner of the hornwork (St Mary's gate) allowed access to the defended area from Gillingham. The hornwork was eventually destroyed during the late 19th century during construction of the naval barracks.

The hornwork became obsolte by the later 19th century and was eventually destroyed during the construction of the naval barracks. (1)
