The Prince of Wales Bastion was one of the original bastions constructed along the Chatham Lines during the first phase of construction (1755-1758). It was placed to defend the Royal Dockard from land attack from the east. The bastion remained a key element in the defences until the Chatham Lines were declared obsolete in 1860.
