The first major phase of the development of the Chatham Lines (1755-1758) included the construction of the Barrier Ditch - ultimately a 300 m long ditch that was part of the defences barring access to the Royal Dockyard from the south. The ditch was pierced by a narrow bridge that allowed access to Fort Amherst and by Church Hill. The ditch extended west of Church Hill (see TQ 76 NE 1) although the part closest to the river is now buried. It became redundant by 1860 by which time the Chatham Lines had become obsolete. (1)
