More than 30 handaxes, 5 cores, 11 flake-tools and more than 120 pieces of flint debitage were recovered from palaeo-Ebbsfleet gravels capping the sequence at the HS1 Southfleet Road Ebbsfleet elephant butchery site. The site was excavated in 2004 as part of pre-HS1 archaeological fieldwork (1, 2). The handaxes come from phase 8 of the site stratigraphic sequence (2 - chapter 4). They include pointed, sub-cordate, cordate and ovate forms, with several of the ovates and cordates having a reverse S-twisted profile (2 - chapter 20). Many are in fresh condition, suggesting occupation, activity and discard on the spot.
