Name: | Retaining wall over footing mound within the inner bailey of Dover Castle |
During archaeological trenching associated with the laying of utilities in the inner bailey of Dover Castle, the footings of a wall were located between the keep and the buildings against the curtain wall on the north eastern side of the complex. It is likley that this wall acted as a retaining wall to the mound covering the substantial footings to the Keep. (location accurate to the nearest 1m based on available information)

During archaeological trenching associated with the laying of utilities in the inner bailey of Dover Castle a rough retaining wall which was enclosed in a rough brown clay which is probably in continuity with the upper most (Edward IV?) medieval layerswas uncovered. It probably represents a late reinforcement of the mound around the skirt of the Keep but could not be traced for very far.
